POETRY SLAM!
What is a Poetry Slam? Do you usually think of poetry as something that you read or write while sitting under a tree on a breezy summer day — or maybe by a warm fireside to enjoy in solitude? POETRY SLAMS bring people together to bring poetry alive! It’s poetry as performance art! Whether you are a first time poet or have written reams of poetry, all are welcome. Slams call for audience participation, too! Bring your poetry, and be ready to listen and to cheer your favorite poets. Perhaps you will discover the new Robert Frost or Emily Dickinson, or maybe it’s YOU!
RULES OF THE SLAM:
The first 10 poets will be chosen before the night of the Slam. Submit your poetry to the LCA, either online or by mail so that it arrives by September 15. If you don’t make that deadline, more poets will be chosen as they come in the door on the night of the Slam – FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED! But show your poems to the doorkeepers!
Each poet will be limited to 3 minutes. That’s firm, well, unless the emcee decides you can go on. Five judges will be chosen from the audience by lot – everyone please register at the door. Each judge will decide number of points to give the poet:
Judges will hold up their ratings after each performance. Scores will be tabulated, and the prizes awarded to poets with the highest number of points. Ties will be broken by lot, or the emcee may decide to give more prizes! Performances recorded on videotape!
PRIZES: First Place: $15; Second Place: $10; Third Place: $5 POETS: $1 per poem ADMISSION: $2 per person
